Is Pakistan the graveyard of talent...?
Why Are Pakistanis Leaving The Country?
Everyone wants to escape, wants to leave
The issue of migration — whether legal or otherwise — has long existed in Pakistan. Of late, however, there has been a huge uptick in people wanting to leave for better livelihoods due to a precarious, high-inflation economy, coupled with rising unemployment, as well as a coercive and unstable political climate.
ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis has revealed that 3.275 million Pakistanis (1.3% of the Pakistani population) have left the country over the past five years.
According to a report published in The Financial Daily, During 2023, approximately 0.9 million Pakistanis left the country only in year 2023, the second highest ever exodus since 1971.
The problem is more severe as they are shifting permanently and don’t want to come back and serve the country. According to research at the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics, 62% of Pakistani youth wants to leave the country for better salaries and respect.
As per statistics of the Pakistan Bureau of Immigration and Overseas Employment until November 2023, 805088 of Pakistani labor force left the country which includes 7000+ accountants, 6500+ agriculturists, 3000+ doctors, 17000+ electricians, 8000+ engineers, 1421+ teachers’ 20000+ technicians, and 356714 unskilled labor.
Category wise 21157 highly qualified, 43342 highly skilled, and 295080 of our skilled labor went abroad in 2023 (until November).
In Pakistan, 250+ universities offer 5000+ degree program, and a large number of them doesn’t have demand in the market. This leads to unemployment resulting in a frustrating condition for young person In addition, the insecurity and bad law and order condition in the country encourages people to go abroad for a more stable life.
If we look at the wage gap between immigrants and natives in the host country, they have become significant as a result of migration. Therefore, with the persistence of income inequality between countries, the movement of migrants to climb the economic ladder is increasing. The white color educated youth of our country are more confident to leave the country as they do not feel a secure future.
Why thousands of Pakistanis are dying to leave the country?
KARACHI: Pakistan climbed to the fifth place in an infamous list of countries, which accounted for the most illegal immigrants in Europe, according to a report released by the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR)
The reports pointed to some chilling data, saying that nearly 40% of Pakistanis wanted to leave the country mainly because of economic difficulties, political uncertainty, lack of educational opportunities lack of employment, inflation, and terrorism.
Hassan Zaidi, a filmmaker who has closely documented the migrants’ journey across multiple routes and borders. “It [stability] is directly proportional to legal and illegal [migrations], both of which are [currently] overloaded. The Canadian embassy doesn’t have time, European embassies don’t have time; it’s so difficult to get an appointment at the US embassy. Everyone wants to get out.”
According to the Displacement Tracking Matrix of the International Organisation for Migration, 4,065 migrants have arrived in Europe from Pakistan by land and sea this year alone. Over the last five years, 273,331 Pakistanis were deported from countries across Europe, according to the FIA.
This phenomenon can also be observed in the numerous videos on TikTok, in which friends of illegal immigrants can be seen cheering them despite knowing the dangers. The men attempting this journey are termed to be courageous and brave sons of their parents.
Previously, agents who used to convince young people to migrate, used to be highly reputed persons of the area coming into contact with people through word of mouth. Now with the advent of social media, TikTok and other similar social media platforms are being used by agents to market their services.
